Carlos Alcaraz is back on the grass, but he's not thinking about the Wimbledon trophy he won last year.
The Spaniard wants to become a better player on the grass by looking to the future because he's just a very competitive tennis player who always aims to achieve the highest goals.
He never plays an event to just play it but to win it, and this has been true for much of his life. Of course, he can't win every tournament that he plays, but those losses are nothing more than lessons.
He cramped against Novak Djokovic at Roland Garros last year but then went on to beat him at Wimbledon not too long after that. That loss was very painful, but he learned from it and applied what he had learned in the Wimbledon final, ultimately winning.
That's what it's about for Alcaraz, who always aims to be a better player, win or lose. That's why he dismissed last year's Wimbledon win when asked about it recently at the Queen's Club.
He played his first match back on grass and won, beating Francisco Cerundolo, but confirmed that he doesn't think about any of his last year's success.
"It doesn’t matter the tournament I’m playing or everything I’ve achieved... I have to still keep learning. I have to get better every day. Every time I step on a grass court, I have to learn how to move better and how to play better. I feel like I’m still learning here."
He might have won the grass-court major, but there is still plenty to learn about grass tennis for him. He can certainly become a better player overall on the surface, and he aims to do that this year by playing and hopefully winning many matches.
The start at the 2024 Cinch Championships was a good one but it was far from a perfect match as he nearly lost the second set.
