Martina Navratilova has stated why she believes Jessica Pegula has yet to make a big breakthrough at a Grand Slam.
Pegula has enjoyed a superb career so far. She is a two-time WTA 1000 champion, a WTA finals runner-up, and a six-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist. The vast majority of players would love a career like hers.
However, failing to get past the quarterfinal of a Grand Slam after six attempts is undoubtedly a source of major frustration for the American. She is consistent, but some have wondered why Pegula has not been able to take the next step.
The 30-year-old surprisingly elected to part ways with her long-term coach, David Witt, last month, with Pegula's ex-coach now working with Maria Sakkari. She did this to try something different in the hope of getting to the very top.
Tennis legend Navratilova has a clear view on why Pegula is yet to win a Grand Slam. Talking to the Tennis Channel, she described how Pegula lacks a particular weapon that some other players have.
"She's really good at every aspect of the game but she's not great in one aspect of the game. She just doesn't have that one big weapon."
Navratilova then mentioned how Pegula's very solid playing style without a big weapon means she needs her contemporaries at the top of the game to be below their best for the American No. 2 to beat them.
"I feel like she needs help from other players because it's just too hard to beat the top players back-to-back without having a bigger weapon."
Navratilova offered Pegula advice on what she should work on to help herself beat the top players more regularly and challenge more often for the biggest prizes.
"I think if I were her, I would work on my serve more than anything and then just develop a bigger forehand."
Pegula is clearly very committed to going as far as she can. The 30-year-old is not pondering retirement like Danielle Collins, who Pegula recently gifted diamonds too. With her strong attitude, there is still time for Pegula to get to the very top.
