Serena Williams retired from tennis last year, but her father, Richard Williams, would like to see her come back and play a couple more Grand Slams.
Richard Williams had a profound effect on his daughter, Serena Williams. As her father, it’s normal that he had a big effect on her, but even in tennis terms, he had a huge impact on her because he was her first coach.
Despite not ever having played tennis professionally or otherwise, Williams served as the first coach for both Venus and Serena. He laid the foundations for two women who would end up being some of the best tennis players ever.
Serena is arguably the best female tennis player of all time, so obviously, the dad did lots of things right. He’s always been quite a bit of a supporter of his daughter as well, and he believes that she could still compete.
Williams retired from the sport at the 2022 US Open, and she was quite content with her decision to do so. Her father, though, in her own words, is pushing her to compete again because he thinks that she would do really well.
There is a decent chance that Williams could play really well if she did return and if she tried her best, but she’s not really interested in that, and it’s why she tells her father to stop nudging her toward a comeback to the sport.
"My dad is like, Serena you should play one more Slam, you should play like two more Grand Slams. And I'm like, dad like please stop."
Time will tell whether Williams does come back to the sport because she has hinted at it herself in the past. For now, it looks like it’s mostly just playful teasing, but it’s not impossible.
