Coco Gauff suffered one of her most shocking losses at the Qatar Open in Doha, but she's not letting it define anything, and she focuses on the Dubai Championships.
Before Gauff stepped on the Doha courts, the last time we saw her play was at the Australian Open. She just gave Aryna Sabalenka a good fight, nearly missing out on winning the opening set.
It was the toughest match the Belarusian had in her title run in Melbourne, so many people were quite impressed with Gauff and how she began the year.
She started with a trophy in Auckland, and that was obviously a good start for her. However, her experience in Doha might have been her worst performance in a very long time.
She faced Katerina Siniakova, admittedly a solid player who can challenge the best, and she certainly did that with Gauff. The Czech player jumped all over the American early in the match and cruised to win the opening set.
Gauff then opened the second one with an early break, and everybody assumed that the comeback was coming. Unfortunately for the American and her fans, that was only a smokescreen because she would go on and lose six games in a row to lose the second set and the match.
Gauff throwing away a 4-0 lead was not something normal based on her previous performances, especially not by losing six games in a row.
It was confusing for many fans and probably the Americans as well because it hasn't happened in a very long time. But she's not too concerned with it. She called it a 'bad day' and looked towards Dubai with the belief that things would go better.
"Yeah, it didn't take me too long. It was just a bad day at the office. I'm not going to let it define how the rest of this week will go, so yeah..."
