"It's important to educate yourself" - Collins on financial literacy

| by Drew Tate

Danielle Collins has become a powerful and loud advocate for financial literacy due to her own process of learning how to handle money.

Handling money is a skill and it's not being taught in school, leaving many people irresponsible with their own finances. She talked about that recently upon graduating:

“I graduated from one of the best schools in the country. but not every program prepares you to be the most financially savvy person. When I got out of school, I didn’t really know how everything worked – I still don’t."

She continued:

“One of the unique things about being as professional athlete is you have this opportunity to make a lot of money at a really young age, and when you’re younger you don’t always know how to manage that. Unfortunately, we all know of professional athletes who have been taken advantage of, we’ve heard the horror stories.”

Collins has ammased over 5 million dollar in career earnings so far but that earning windows is short. Most players are not able to keep up that amount of ernings once they retire. On that, Collins added:

“That’s why it’s so important to educate yourself and put yourself in a situation where you’re working with professionals who can help guide you. For a lot of people, finances can be a scary subject. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is not being afraid to ask for help, getting second opinions, trying to educate yourself as best as possible so that you can become the most resourceful. And I’ve been really fortunate. I’ve had some incredible mentors outside of tennis that have been able to help guide me, to put myself in a situation where I can be financially free.”
