Emma Raducanu has captived the attention of a nation with her US Open triumph and it started a boom for tennis on the island.
Emma Raducanu won the US Open last year, and according to former British No. 1 Laura Robson, that victory opened up new avenues for tennis in the UK and ensured that her reputation would outlive her first Grand Slam victory the previous year. Robson spoke with Tennis365 at Wimbledon detailing her experience on how Raducanu sparked interest in the sport almost overnight.
"I did this interview with Wimbledon for a local primary school and asked the kids who was their favourite player and almost all of them said Emma. It’s so cool. Just to have that inspirational figure to look up to."
"They all watched the US Open last year and they were looking forward to seeing her at Wimbledon and it is cool that in five years time, they will have watched Emma grow and they will be teenagers themselves by then."
Robson had plenty of chances to see Raducanu at the National Tennis Centre where she observed how hard-working and dedicated to her craft she really is. It's just a confirmation that the US Open success was not by chance and it the product of consistent work.
"She is so exciting to watch. She is right there with them and just needs a good run of training and competition to get her body used to playing week in, week out. I see her at the National Tennis Centre and she is always working so hard, so her time will come again. She is still so young and we shouldn’t worry about someone who has already won a Grand Slam title."
