"I'm never surprised when I see someone that seems like a surprise" - Pegula on being "aware of other girls"

In 2022, Jessica Pegula finally broke into Top 10 of the WTA Rankings and now she eyes WTA Finals participation that she wants to secure at the 2022 San Diego Open.

Despite winning only one WTA title in her career, Jessica Pegula is the sixth highest-ranked player in the world and she's only a few points away from climbing to world no. 3 spot. Her consistency is the key to success and at WTA 500 event in San Diego, she will try to earn some important points to make sure she will be able to compete at this year's WTA Finals.

The 28-years-old American will begin her journey against compatriot Coco Vandeweghe and if she succeeds, she can meet yet another American, Madison Keys or the eight-seeded Daria Kasatkina. Speaking about her good awareness of other players ahead of the tournament, she said:

"It has definitely always been a goal [to play the WTA Finals]," Pegula said. "I don't know if it was the main goal at the beginning of the year, but as the year went on it was definitely something we were working towards at every tournament."

"I feel like I really don't take any match for granted," Pegula said. "I think I'm really aware of other girls who aren't ranked as high, their results and how they're doing. I watch a lot of people so I'm never really surprised when I see someone that seems like a surprise."
