Iga Swiatek won't be playing at the upcoming Guadalajara Open, sharing the news on her social media.
Iga Swiatek didn't have the best US Open stretch, failing to win any trophies, which lately became the standard for her. Coco Gauff beat her in Cincinnati, and Jelena Ostapenko also outplayed her at the US Open, which lost her the number-one ranking in the world.
She won't play at the upcoming Guadalajara Open, the WTA 1000 event, due to fatigue, which she revealed on her social media. She described it as a 'change of schedule' but added that she needs to listen to her body and might need a break. The break won't be long because she'll return in Tokyo the week after the Guadalajara Open on September 25th.
Hi guys. Unfortunately, I need to withdraw from the tournament in Guadalajara due to a change of schedule. I need to listen to my body and as the season is very intense - our number one priority is to play until the end in good health and plan it wisely so we wouldn't risk an injury. I'm sorry to not be there but I'm sure the atmosphere in Guadalajara will be as amazing as I remember. See you in Tokyo.
This news is not entirely surprising because the Polish player returned home to Europe after the US Open, and making the big trip across the ocean again for that event made very little sense, especially as she wanted to rest up a bit.
The event is big, but it's a non-mandatory WTA 1000, so she can skip it without facing any consequences. Taking some time off and then starting back up in Tokyo makes sense, as she'll likely play a few more events in East Asia. It makes a lot of sense logistically.
