World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka opened up on her recent impromptu meeting with retired football legend David Beckham in Miami.
Sabalenka, who resides in Miami, had the chance to strike up a conversation with the former Manchester United midfielder, a day after watching his splashy Netflix documentary detailing the highs and lows of Beckham's football career and his life. Sabalenka shared their meetup on Instagram with the caption, "Low-key Miami morning."
The Belarusian star also met David Beckham's wife, Victoria, in a separate setting during a celebrity-filled opening night of the Casadonna restaurant in Miami a couple of weeks ago. Victoria Beckham features in the docuseries which unfolds the 24-year marriage of the two global stars of sports and fashion.
Sabalenka spoke to Tennis Channel, without detailing the conversation, but she called it an "amazing" experience chatting with the 48-year-old. Beckham is the owner of Inter Miami, a soccer team plying its trade in Major League Soccer in the United States.
"It was amazing. David (Beckham) is such a nice guy. It was really nice talking to him. I had some great meetings. It was quite funny. I literally just finished watching his Netflix show and like the next day I’m meeting David Beckham. How crazy is that? I was telling him ‘I just finished watching your show. It was amazing.’ I asked him a couple of questions and it was a nice conversation with him."
The 25-year-old from Minsk is currently in Cancun, Mexico, having swapped the beautiful, sunny weather of Florida. She is one of eight women competing at the 2023 WTA Finals. It was a dream start to her campaign on Sunday night as she scored an emphatic win over Greece's Maria Sakkari, winning 6-0, 6-1 in her first round-robin match.
Sabalenka is facing a major challenge to ending the year as the WTA's No.1 with Iga Swiatek expected to do everything in her power to reclaim the throne in the final tournament before the season comes to an end.
