Stefanos Tsitsipas was far from happy when the chair umpire issued him a coaching violation during his semifinal match at the 2022 Madrid Open.
Tsitsipas was playing Alexander Zverev in a battle between the world's Top 10 players, as each one fought for the right to face Carlos Alcaraz in the final. The Spaniard had booked his spot in the showpiece final at his home event by beating Novak Djokovic in a classic earlier in the day.
Stefanos is no stranger to receiving code violations for receiving coaching input from his father, Apostolos Tsitsipas, who comes to every tournament that his son plays.
Many times, this doesn't end up very well as the duo has been penalized for coaching multiple times, and at the 2022 Madrid Open, it was no different as the Greek received a coaching violation in his semifinal match.
After Alexander Zverev claimed that Stefanos Tsitsipas is currently the best clay-court player in the world, he defeated him in the match. But a contentious moment in the decider left Tsitsipas fuming.
In the fourth game of the third set, when the German was already a break up, Tsitsipas received a coaching violation and took issue with the matter when he confronted the chair umpire arguing that other players are given leniency when it came to coaching and and were not penalized.
Tsitsipas didn't agree with this decision, when he went to the umpire and said, "I'll search in the video later, okay? You have to give coaching violation to other players too. And you know who I'm referring to."
Tsitsipas has fallen just short of adding a second Masters 1000 title on clay, having triumphed at the Monte-Carlo Masters last month. He will look to shake off that incident as he travels to Rome to play the Italian Open.
