Sinner Expecting Struggles On Clay After 'Nearly Perfect' Start Of Season

| by Zachary Wimer

Jannik Sinner has had a tremendous 2024 season, much better than he ever anticipated, but he thinks it's going to get a lot tougher in the coming weeks.

No player has had a better 2024 campaign so far than Sinner. The Italian has been the best player in tennis by far this year, and his results certainly prove that. He won the only major played so far, but he didn't stop there.

He recently won the Rotterdam Open and the Miami Open, becoming world number two in the process. That's a new career high, and he'll even have a decent shot at becoming world number one, with projections putting him as the likely world number one by June.

That's a lot more than he thought he'd do at the start of the year, but he's obviously enjoying it. In a talk with Prakash Amritraj of the Tennis Channel after lifting the Miami Open trophy, Sinner admitted that he's living in the moment for now but also understands that the coming weeks will be complicated.

He's a pretty good clay player, but it's not his best surface, and he's had some issues with it in the past. He certainly expects a lot more trouble in the coming weeks, but he's ready for it.

"New chapter clay is coming, usually I struggle thre a little bit so let's see what I can achieve this time. Until now the season has been nearly perfect. I would never expect to be like this and now I am just living the moment. I forget the past and let's see what I can get in the clay season."

There won't be a lot of time to rest because the Monte-Carlo Masters is less than a week away, and his first clay practice is scheduled for Thursday. That's only a few days on the surface before his first match.
