The 2023 ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand, had a shocking start for Norwegian tennis player Casper Ruud.

The 24-year-old, who had a strong finish to the 2022 season and was considered one of the tournament favorites, was upset in the first round by Serbia's Laslo Djere, 6-3, 3-6, 6-7(3). However, Ruud, who is currently ranked No. 3 in the world, had a good start against the unseeded Djere.

In the opening set, Ruud broke his opponent once, eventually winning the set 6-3. However, the Serbian managed to turn things around in the second set, breaking his opponent to level the match at one set all.

In the decider, Djere managed to edge out Ruud in a tense third set tiebreak, 7-3, to secure the shock victory. It was a tough loss for Ruud, who had high hopes for this tournament after losing to Matteo Berrettini at the United Cup.

The defeat is a disappointment for Ruud, but it is also a reminder that no match can be taken for granted on the ATP Tour. Djere, who is ranked No. 70 in the world, demonstrated that he is a talented player with a lot of potential and can never be underestimated. This match also shows that there is a lot of depth in men's tennis and that anyone can win on a given day.

Ruud will now turn his attention to the Australian Open, where he will look to bounce back and make a deep run in the tournament. He will have to take the loss as a learning experience and use it to improve his game and come back stronger. Despite the early exit in Auckland, Ruud is still one of the most exciting young talents in the game and has a bright future ahead of him.
