Roger Federer considered announcing his retirement far sooner than he actually did but opted against it to allow Serena Williams her moment.

In the weeks before the US Open Roger Federer was expected to announce his retirement according to his father Roberto but Serena Williams' announcement came first. Federer delayed his own announcement to let her savour her moment because the American legend was scheduled to play a few more events before her retirement, unlike Federer.

He shared that in an interview with a Swiss newspaper a day after Federer officially retired. "The bigger problem was finding the time and place to announce it. It was autumn again, the US Open was over. This wouldn't have been the ideal time for Rogi, especially since it was also about Serena Williams, who resigned there" explained Federer senior.

Robert and Lynette Federer were in attendance during his tearful departure at the Laver Cup on Friday and shed tears along with their kid and other family members. It was a touching moment for them and Robert said of it:

"It couldn't have been better and the timing was right too. It was very emotional for everyone, not only for Rogi but also for the players. Nadal in particular was very touched."
