Stefanos Tsitsipas produced a very good effort to avoid a long match against Jannik Sinner winning in two sets 7-6(2) 6-2.
It was a very interesting match and one that illustrates the way Tsitsipas played all week. He jumped out to a 3-0 lead being very focused and playing well. Then he complicated matters by losing that advantage and making it 3-3. He then played superbly well to get to the tiebreak where he outplayed Sinner easily. The 2nd set is when Tsitsipas showed his talent taking apart Sinner from the baseline.
After the match, the Greek said:
“I am happy things turned out well. It was a great day at the office. I was able to really step it up in the second set and I think the most important part was that first set tie-break. I really went for it when I had to. I didn’t overthink or hesitate and that paid off in the end.”
It was a good match that could have been very worse but Tsitsipas once again proved himself on clay. He will need to do that again today against Zverev who bested him last week in Madrid. It's their 2nd match on clay this year with Zverev proving better last week and Tsitsipas winning in Monte-Carlo. On that, he said:
“We have similar game styles but he is one of the most difficult players to play against on the Tour. I have a lot of respect for him. He has achieved a lot so far and I try and look up to him with the things he has achieved.”
