Roger Federer's participation at the Halle event has been an integral part of his pre-Wimbledon routine for many years.

Federer participated in the competition for many years almost never skipping it and it was frequently his lone warm-up event before Wimbledon. He won Halle a record 10 times, so it was simply something that worked for him as his number of Wimbledon trophies shows as well. The final triumph came in 2019 when he defeated David Goffin in the final.

2021 was his last appearance and it ended with a loss to Auger-Aliassime. Besides winning it 10 times he also lost in 3 finals with the most recent final loss in 2018 to Borna Coric. In an interview over the weekend, Halle Tournament director Ralf Weber confirmed that Federer has been in contact with him and signalled his openness to play at the event again.

Those matches would be exhibition matches but he was given positive signals about Federer making an appearance at Halle once more:

"We've already talked to him about it. Roger has signaled his willingness to cooperate."
