Daniil Medvedev to play 2022 Geneva Open

After missing from the ATP Tour for over a month, Daniil Medvedev will return to action in under two weeks at the Geneva Open.

The event in Switzerland is one of two warm-up tournaments being played in the final week before Roland Garros. Medvedev, who last played at the Miami Open at the end of March, will make his long-awaited return from hernia surgery.

The Geneva Open organizers confirmed that the World No. 2 was offered a wild card to spearhead the draw. Medvedev hasn't played any clay-court tennis this season, and accepting a late entry into an ATP 250 on clay suggests he wants to refine his game on the dirt before going to Paris.

The Russian's struggles on the surface are well documented, but he'll be determined to reign supreme in a modest field comprised of a significant number of low-ranked players. Additionally, Geneva is at altitude, meaning it has a profile as one of the fastest clay courts on tour.

The event runs from May 14th to May 21st, and the 2021 US Open champion will effectively be the top seed ahead of Casper Ruud and Denis Shapovalov, the other top players who will be among the favorites for the title.

"Daniil Medvedev will play at the Gonet Geneva Open 2022. Career titles: 13 ATP Tour singles titles, including a Grand Slam title at the 2021 US Open. Are you excited to see Medvedev play?"

Ruud is the defending champion, and it will be interesting to see how Medvedev does in his first event back and whether he can get into shape for the French Open.

Medvedev has undergone successful surgery for a hernia problem that has been bothering him for a while. He revealed in April that he played through pain in the first half of the season.
