Matteo Berrettini won't play for the Italian Davis Cup Team as he failed to recover in time to be able to play for his country.

At the Naples competition, when he was defeated by Lorenzo Musetti in the final, Berrettini sustained a foot injury. He skipped the remaining activities in the hopes of being healthy enough for the Davis Cup Finals, but Italy will be without him and Jannik Sinner.

"Sadly I have lost my recovery race to be ready in time for the Davis Cup Finals," wrote Berrettini on Instagram.

"The medical experts have advised that I am still not able to compete at my highest level following the foot injury l suffered in Naples. There is no greater honour than representing Italy, so the news is very hard to take. I will still travel to Malaga with the team to support in anyway I can."

Italy will now rely on Musetti, Sonego and Fognini for the singles matches at the competition.
