Tennis enthusiasts have long debated who will take over the mantle from tennis legends Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic, once they retire.
The subject of this debate has been reignited by Daniil Medvedev, who recently declared Carlos Alcaraz as the best pick to take over tennis after the trio of legends eventually call it quits. Alcaraz, the youngest World No.1 in history, won his maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open last year.
He has since shown immense promise on the tennis court, impressing the likes of Medvedev, who believes he has the talent to dominate the sport for years to come.
"Yeah, I have to say Alcaraz is the best pick because he is the youngest No. 1 in world history. We have guys like Novak [Djokovic], Rafa [Nadal], Roger [Federer], and he beat this record where you kind of thought that there are no more records to beat at the moment."
Medvedev praised Alcaraz's raw talent, citing his powerful forehand as a particular strength. He also acknowledged that the young Spaniard has room to grow and develop, as any tennis player does.
"I watched him in Buenos Aires, I didn't see it in real. The way he hits the ball, it's pure talent. You cannot really practice this. The power he has on the forehand. He can win a lot of things. But, as we saw, he can also lose sometimes. He can get injured. You never know how one career is going to go."
While Alcaraz's rise to the top of the sport has been meteoric, it remains to be seen how his career will pan out. As Medvedev noted, tennis is a challenging and unpredictable sport, and injuries can derail even the most promising of careers.
"If you asked me, I need to pick him. Holger Rune is super young, has won already a Masters. Playing great also. I saw him cramping today. Tennis is never easy. You never know how people's careers is going to go. If I have to pick them two, they are the youngest and the highest ranked."
